Alert Bay Artists Society (ABAS) was formed in the fall of 2010 by nine artists and art lovers within Alert Bay. The idea for a Society was a result of the success of three consecutive "Artfests" and the desire to form an ongoing active art community in Alert Bay. The first and biggest task the Society faced was taking over the former Lions' Den downtown above the Library and Visitor's Centre, and transforming it into an active non-profit gallery, the Alert Bay ArtLoft Gallery. Grand Opening of the ArtLoft was held during Moonlight Madness, November 29 2010. The initial month long exhibition showcased the work the of the founding members only. With the exception of a few solo shows, every show since has featured the art of the ABAS mebership base. The ArtLoft is currently located in the front of the Seine Boat Inn building on Fir Street and features rotating theme shows, each 6 weeks in duration.
